SALEM, VA- The Winston-Salem State Rams (13-24) had an offensive breakout when the team took an 11-0 win over the Bowie State Bulldogs (14-18) to remain in the winner's bracket of the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tournament. The Rams combined a terrific offensive effort with a no-hitter to claim the win.
As a team, the Rams struck with 12 hits in the game. WSSU sophomore pitcher Erica Davis led the way for the Rams with a two-for-two batting effort with two triples, three runs scored, and two RBI. Junior shortstop Destiny Snipes added a two-for-three batting effort with a grand slam home run, a run scored, and four RBI in the game.
The Rams struck early and often to claim the win. The team opened the game with a hot start, scoring five first inning runs. Snipes got things started with a grand slam home run. The effort was followed by a an RBI single from senior first base Anna Marino that scored junior third base Kortney Thomas and left the Rams on top, 5-0 after the first inning. In the second inning, Davis hit an RBI triple to score Holloman. Senior designated player Samantha Gibbs added an RBI to score Davis and left the Rams on top, 7-0. The Rams added four third inning runs. The effort included a second RBI triple from Davis in the game.
Davis (8-13) took the pitching win. She started the game and pitched all five innings. She finished the game with no runs and no hits allowed with three strikeouts.
With the win, the Rams improve to 13-24. The team will advance in the winner's bracket of the tournament, tomorrow. The team will return to action tomorrow, when the Rams take on the Chowan Lady Hawks, the top-seeded team from the CIAA Northern Division, in a 2:30 p.m. game.
