SALEM, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (13-26) gave a tremendous effort, but the team came up short in an 11-10 nine-inning loss to the Fayetteville State Broncos (15-24), Tuesday afternoon. With a trip to the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship on the line, the Rams gave a tremendous effort, pushing the game to nine innings; however, it was the Rams whose season ended in the hard-fought loss.
The Rams played a great overall game in the tough loss. As a team, the Rams matched the Broncos with 14 hits in the game with just two errors. WSSU junior third base Kortney Thomas led the way for the Rams with a four-for-four batting effort with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI. Freshman pitcher Tia Robinson added three RBI and sophomore pitcher Erica Davis added a home run.
The game was a dramatic one with both teams going on strong runs throughout the game. It was the Rams who struck first with five first-inning runs. Davis got things started with a two-run home run while Robinson drew a bases-loaded RBI walk, followed by a two RBI double by junior Daijah Chambers. The effort left the Rams on top 5-0 after the first inning. The Rams added a second-inning run when senior Anna Marino hit an RBI double to score Davis. Fayetteville State answered with a pair of second inning runs that left WSSU on top, 6-2. Thomas hit a solo home run in the third inning to push the Rams' lead to six runs, 7-2, but Fayetteville State added a third inning run of their own to leave the Rams on top, 7-3. From there, things got tough with Fayetteville State scoring five fourth inning runs to leave the Rams trailing, 8-7. Robinson tied the game in the seventh inning with an RBI single that sent the game into extra innings. Freshman Nyla Howard scored the Rams' first extra inning run on a Fayetteville State fielding error, but the Broncos matched the run as well. From there, both teams went into the ninth inning 9-9. In the ninth inning, Robinson hit an RBI single to score Davis and left the Rams on top, 10-9. Unfortunately, the Broncos had a walk-off two-RBI double that ended the game and the Rams' season.
Robinson (4-13) took the pitching loss. She came in for 5.1 innings and finished the game with five runs allowed (two earned) on eight hits. She added three strikeouts. Sophomore Erica Davis started the game and went three innings with six runs allowed (five earned) and two strikeouts.
The loss ends the 2018 season for the Rams. For more information on WSSU Softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
