Snipes Walk Off Single Keys 2-1 Win Over Benedict

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (2-0) got some clutch hits when the team took a 2-1 win over the Benedict Tigers (0-2), Friday afternoons. After taking a 0-1 deficit into the sixth inning, the Rams tied the game in the sixth inning and got a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim the win.

The Rams totaled 10 hits in the game, but the team was held to just two runs. They were enough for the Rams to claim the win, however.  WSSU senior outfielder Destiny Snipes led the way for the Rams, going three-for-four at the plate with an RBI. Freshman outfielder Shauntaja Dedecker added a two-for-three effort at the plate with a double and a run scored. She was the only other WSSU player with multiple hits. Junior Erica Davis and freshman Jasmine McCain both recorded doubles.

The game got off to a slow start for both teams. However, things got heated up late in the game for the Rams to claim the win. Benedict struck first with a run scored in the third inning. The Rams didn't get onto the scoreboard until the sixth inning when freshman Destiny Koonts hit an RBI sacrifice fly that scored fellow freshman Alleigh Himes to tie the game. It was Snipes, the senior who got the game-winning hit when she hit an RBI single to scored Dedecker for the win.

WSSU sophomore Tia Robinson (1-0) took the pitching win. She threw all seven innings for the Rams. She held the Tigers to just one run on eight hits with a strikeout and three walks.

With the win, the Rams improve to 2-0 on the season. The team will return to action, Sunday when they head to Mars Hill, N.C. to take on the Mars Hill Lions. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
