ELIZABETH CITY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (11-3, 2-0 CIAA) broke out late to claim a 12-0 win over the Bowie State Bulldogs (0-6, 0-2 CIAA), Friday afternoon. The Rams combined a great offensive effort with some quality defense to claim their second straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) win of the season.
The Rams broke out in a big way to claim the win. As a team, the Rams combined for 14 hits while holding the Bulldogs to just three hits. WSSU junior outfielder Shauntaja Dedecker led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three batting performance with four RBI, two runs scored, and a home run. Junior pitcher Erica Davis added a two-for-two batting effort with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior catcher Kortney Thomas added a home run as well.
All of the WSSU scoring came in two innings of play while the team held the Bulldogs scoreless. The Rams got things started with five first inning runs. The team closed the game with seven sixth inning runs as well to claim the win.
Davis (6-2) took the pitching win. She pitched all five innings and she held the Bulldogs scoreless on just three hits and she recorded six strikeouts and just two walks allowed.
The Rams will continue CIAA play when the team takes on the Virginia State Trojans in a 10:00 a.m. game. The team will also take on Virginia Union and Lincoln (Pa.) later in the day.
