INSTITUTE, WV – The Winston-Salem State Rams (33-11) got their post-season started in a big way when the team took a 3-0 win over the West Virginia State Yellowjackets in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Softball Tournament, Thursday afternoon. The Rams combined some strong hitting with some great defensive play to record their first regional tournament victory in school history.
The game was a tough defensive battle for both teams with both teams struggling to get hits. However, the Rams were able to take advantage of a great defensive effort to pull out the win. Both the Rams and the Yellowjackets totaled just four hits each in the game, but the Rams made the most of their limited batting as they scored three runs in the game. WSSU designated player Shauntaja Dedecker led the way for the Rams with a one-for-three performance with two RBI on a double. She recorded the sole extra base hit of the game for the Rams.
WSSU scored all three of their runs in the first inning of play and it was all the Rams needed to take the victory. After a leadoff single to start the game, the Rams added an RBI single from freshman third base Alleigh Himes to score junior Daijah Chambers. The team added two more runs later in the inning when Dedecker hit a two-RBI double that scored Himes and junior pitcher Erica Davis. The three runs were all the Rams would score for the remainder of the game, but thanks to their defense, they were all that the team needed to take the win.
Davis (15-7) took the pitching win. She started the game and she threw all seven innings of the game. She allowed no runs on just four hits with a strikeout.
With the win, the Rams advance in the winners' bracket and the team will take on the winner of the West Chester/Gannon game. WSSU will take the field, tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. Live video of the game will be available at: https://mountaineast.tv/?bfplayvid=123375.
