FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (2-4, 1-2 CIAA) opened Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division play in a big way when the team took a dominating 9-0 win over at Fayetteville State (1-3, 1-3 CIAA), Thursday afternoon. The win was a key one for the Rams as the team opens CIAA Southern Division play against the Lady Broncos.
The Rams opened the game with a dominating performance in doubles play. Junior Alexus Morgan and sophomore China Brown joined junior Zakia Spencer and freshman Cylah Gaither with matching 8-1 doubles wins at #2 and #3 doubles. The duo of senior Gabrielle Lindsay and junior Aja Grant completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at #1 doubles.
The Rams kept things up in singles play when the team dominated to complete the sweep. Brown and Spencer all got things started with 6-1, 6-0 wins at #4 and #5 singles while Morgan took a slightly different approach with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #2 singles. Gaither added a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 singles while Grant took a 6-4, 6-1 win at #2 singles and Lindsay rounded things out with a 7-5, 6-2 win at #1 singles.
With the win, the Rams open CIAA Southern Division play at 1-0 while improving to 1-2 in overall CIAA play. The team also improves to 2-4 overall. The Rams won't have long to celebrate their victory as the team will return to action tomorrow to take on the Shaw Lady Bears tomorrow.
