ETTRICK, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-6, 6-2 CIAA) had to dig deep to claim a clutch 5-4 road win over the Virginia State Trojans (8-4, 5-3 CIAA), Friday afternoon. The win was a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) match for the Rams who bounced back after a road loss yesterday.
The Rams got to a slow start in doubles play with the duo of freshman Avion Harris and sophomore Cylah Gaither scoring the team's sole doubles win with an 8-6 performance at #3 doubles. The team took losses at #1 and #2 doubles to fall behind 1-2.
The Rams bounced back in a big way with four singles wins to claim the win. Harris stayed hot with a 6-1, 6-4 win at #5 singles which was followed by a 6-2, 6-4 win at #4 singles to give the Rams a 3-2 lead. After losses at #6 singles and #3 singles, to fall behind 4-3, the Rams took key wins at #1 and #2 singles to claim the win. Freshman Taylor Champion got a 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 win at #2 singles while senior Alexus Morgan closed things out with a 6-1, 10-6 win at #1 singles to seal the win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 7-6 overall and 6-2 in CIAA play.
