BOWIE, MD – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-9) gave one of their best efforts of the season, but the team fell short in a 5-1 loss to the Shaw Lady Bears (20-2) in the semifinal round of the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship Tournament. The loss ended the Rams' season, but the team gave a tremendous effort and capped a great season.
The Rams had one of their top moments of the season in doubles play. The duo of senior Aja Grant and freshman Taylor Champion took an 8-6 win at #3 doubles to give the Lady Bears their first doubles loss against a CIAA team this season. However, the Rams took a pair of 8-0 losses at #1 and #2 doubles.
After heading into singles play trailing, the Lady Bears 2-1, the Rams needed four singles wins to rally for the win. However, the team ran out of gas after the grueling doubles matches. The Rams took losses at #1 (6-0, 6-1), #5 (6-3, 6-0) and at #2 (6-0, 6-0) singles.
With the loss, the Rams end the 2018 season with a 10-9 record and complete their third straight season with a winning record. For more information on Rams tennis, log on to www.WSSURams.com.
