BOWIE, MD – The Winston-Salem State Rams (12-6) took an impressive hard-fought win over the Fayetteville State Broncos (7-10), Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship Tournament. Though the team took the shutout win, the team had to work hard to get it against a Fayetteville State team that had a lot of heart.
The Rams opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at #1 and #3 doubles. It was the duo of senior China Brown and freshman Kyrsten Jennelle with a 6-0 win at #1 singles before sophomore Cylah Gaither and freshman Kyra Akande took a 6-1 win at #3 doubles. With the effort, the Rams took a 1-0 lead into singles play.
In singles play, the Rams needed just three singles to clinch the match win. Sophomore Avion Harris got things started with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3 singles. Junior Tay'lor Champion added a 6-4, 6-1 win at #1 singles. The match was clilnched when Jennelle took a 6-3, 6-3 win at #4 singles.
With the win, the Rams improve to 12-6 overall and the team advances to the semifinal round of the 2019 CIAA Women's Tennis Championship Tournament.
