FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (15-4, 11-1 CIAA) scored one of their biggest wins of the season when the team took a four-set road victory over the Fayetteville State Broncos (15-7, 10-2 CIAA), Monday evening. The win keeps the Rams in the hunt for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division title and gave the Rams a season sweep over the Broncos.
The Rams took the win behind a great overall team effort. As a team, the Rams totaled 45 kills in the match with junior outside hitter Mia Herrod leading the way with 14 kills while senior outside hitter Jasmine Smith added 10 kills. The Rams also benefitted from an outstanding defensive effort with three players scoring double-digit digs in the match. Sophomore libero Makala Lytton led the way with 15 digs while senior outside hitter Sydney Holland and senior setter Mya Snow recorded a double-double 12 digs to go along with her 27 assists. Junior middle blocker Christa Brown added four total blocks (one solo) as well.
The beginning of the match belonged to the home team with Fayetteville State taking a 25-17 opening set win over the Rams. After playing to a two-point deficit, 16-18, the Rams were outscored 7-1 to close the set and finished with the loss to open the match.
The Rams would not take long to answer with a 25-21 win. The set was a hard-fought affair with the two teams playing to a 14-14 tie before the Rams fell behind 14-16. The Rams broke out in a big way when the team went on a 7-1 run to go ahead, 21-17. The rally included a service ace from freshman setter Brittany Carpenter. Fayetteville State would score three straight points to pull to within a point of the Rams, but WSSU would not allow the Broncos to get any closer as a 4-1 WSSU rally closed the set and gave the Rams the 25-21 win.
With the match tied at 1-1, the Rams took control of the match with a dominating 25-15 win over the Broncos. The Rams opened the set in a big way, taking an early 4-1 lead over the Broncos. The two teams played to a 6-6 tie before the Rams broke the set open with a 6-1 rally and gave the Rams a 12-9 lead. The Rams remained in control, 18-14 before cruising in the final stretch of the match. The team unleashed a 7-1 rally to close out the match. The rally included a pair of kills from Snow as well kills from Smith and Holland.
The fourth and final set of the match was the most thrilling of the night with the Rams prevailing in the end. The Rams jumped with an early 5-1 lead before the Broncos rallied to tie the set, 8-8. The Rams staged another four-point rally to go ahead 14-10, but Fayetteville State tied the set once again, 14-14. After going ahead of the Broncos, 23-22, the Rams pulled away for good when the team closed the set with a 2-1 rally that included kills from Smith and Herrod that ended the match.
With the win, the Rams improve to 15-4 overall and 11-1 in CIAA play. More importantly, the team improved 5-1 in CIAA Southern Division play and remain tied for first place in the division. The Rams will get a well-deserved break before returning to action, Monday to host the Saint Augustine's Falcons in the team's Dig White match.
