Rams Roll in Three-Set Win Over Saint Augustine's

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (16-4, 12-1 CIAA) took their fifth straight win in dominating fashion when the team took a three-set win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons (4-9,  4-9 CIAA), Monday evening. The Rams put on an impressive overall effort both defensively and offensively to claim the 25-21, 25-15, and 25-19 win.

As a team, the Rams combined a strong offensive effort with some impressive defense to claim the three-set victory. As a team, the Rams totaled 44 kills with just 12 attack errors in the match while holding the Falcons to just 27 kills in the match. WSSU senior outside hitters Sydney Holland and Jasmine Smith both scored 11 kills in the match while junior hitter Mia Herrod added 11 kills of her own. Senior defensive specialist Michelle Murray-Garcia led the defensive effort with 11 digs while sophomore libero Makala Lytton added 10 digs as well.

After a competitive start, the Rams broke away from the Falcons early in the opening set to claim the win. After playing to a 4-3 start in the set, the Rams went on a 9-2 run to go ahead, 11-6. The Rams allowed a 4-1 run by the Falcons that cut the WSSU lead down to two points, 11-9. The Rams would push their lead to four points 19-15 before Saint Augustine's once again worked their way back into the set, 20-21. However, the Rams would then turn up their efforts with a 4-1 run to claim the 25-21 win.

The second set was much less dramatic as the Rams took control early and never looked back.  The Rams opened the set with an 8-3 rally to take an early lead. Saint Augustine's showed some fight when they went on a 5-1 run before tying the set at 11-11. It was all Winston-Salem State from there on as the Rams outscored the Falcons 14-4 to close out the set. The Rams had a five-point rally along with a four-point rally during their dominating effort during the set and closed it with a 25-15 win.

The third set was a closer affair, but the Rams would not relent as they pulled away late to claim the victory. The Rams opened the set, jumping out to a 12-6 lead before Saint Augustine's mounted a 9-3 rally to cut the WSSU lead down to two points, 15-13. The scare put some much needed life into the Rams as the team pushed ahead late to take a 23-18 lead. However, the Rams would not allow the Falcons to get any closer as they closed out the set with a 2-1 run that was capped by a WSSU block.

With the win, the Rams improve to 16-4 overall and 12-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. More importantly, the team improved to 6-1 in the CIAA Southern Division and keep pace to remain tied for first place in the division. The Rams will return to action, Wednesday when they head to Belmont, N.C. to take on the Belmont Abbey Crusaders.
