PETERSBURG, VA – After an extremely successful regular season, the Winston-Salem State Rams (19-7, 14-2 CIAA) will begin their quest for a conference championship at the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship Tournament this weekend. After finishing the regular season with a 19-7 overall record and a 14-2 record in CIAA play, the Rams are in prime position to claim their second CIAA championship in three seasons.
The Rams earned the #2 seed from the CIAA Southern Division after going a dominating 8-2 in divisional play. The team took season sweeps over four of the five other teams in the division, including its first season sweep over Fayetteville State in over five years. The team will enter the tournament having won three of their last four matches.
The Rams will open the tournament at 2:30 p.m. when they take on the Virginia Union Lady Panthers, the #3 seeded team from the CIAA Northern Division. Virginia Union finished the regular season with a 15-10 overall record and an 8-8 record in CIAA play. The Rams took a three-set win over the Lady Panthers at the 2017 CIAA Round Up in September. WSSU senior outside hitter Jasmine Smith led the way for the Rams with nine kills in the match while freshman middle hitter Alexis Gregson-Hammond added seven kills as well.
