Rams Top Virginia Union in Three Sets to Advance to Semifinals at 2017 CIAA Volleyball Championship

PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (20-7) began their quest for the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship in impressive fashion as the team took a three-set win over the Virginia Union Panthers (15-11). The Rams rolled to the win behind a great overall effort to claim the 25-16, 25-18, and 25-15 win.

The Rams clicked on all cylinders to claim the win. As a team, the Rams totaled 39 kills while holding the Panthers to just 18 kills. WSSU senior outside hitters Jasmine Smith and Sydney both led the way for the Rams with 12 kills each. Holland also added three digs. Sophomore libero Makala Lytton added a game-high six service aces as well.

The opening set was a stellar one for the Rams. The team jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but it was later in the set when the team pulled away with an 11-3 run to wrap up the set. The rally included eight straight WSSU points.

The domination carried over into the second set when the Rams opened the set with a close 9-7 lead before breaking the set open with seven straight points, including kills from Holland and Brown, but also included four VUU errors. At the end of the run, the Rams stood on top, 16-9. Virginia Union answered later in the set with five straight points to cut the WSSU lead down to four points, 20-16. However, the Rams would not relent as they pulled out the 25-18 set win.

The final set turned out to be close early, but the Rams pulled away late to seal the victory. The two teams played to a 6-6 tie before the Rams took a 15-10 lead after a 6-2 run. The Rams kept their lead until a blistering 10-1 rally to seal the 25-15 victory.

With the win, the Rams improve to 20-7 overall. The Rams will return to action in the semifinal round of the 2017 CIAA Volleyball Championship Tournament. The Rams will take on the Chowan Lady Hawks, the top seed from the CIAA Northern Division. The two teams will take the court at 4:30 p.m. at the Multipurpose Center on the campus of Virginia State University.
