Rams Advance to CIAA Volleyball Championship Match with Three-Set Win Over Chowan

PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (21-7) advanced to the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship match in stellar fashion when the team took a three-set win over the CIAA Northern Division Champion Chowan Hawks (15-12), Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Rams return to the CIAA Volleyball Championship match for the second time in three seasons and will seek their second conference title in three seasons.

The Rams took the win behind a dominating overall performance. As a team, the Rams totaled 49 kills in the match while holding Chowan to just 26 kills. The Rams also added 10 total blocks (two solo) to go along with 66 digs. WSSU senior outside hitter Jasmine Smith led the way for the Rams with a team-high 16 kills while fellow senior outside hitter Sydney Holland added a double-double 11 kills with 22 digs. Junior right side hitter Mia Herrod added 10 kills as well.

The Rams dominated portions of the opening set to get the match started in style. After starting the set with an 8-8 tie, the Rams broke the set open with a 7-3 rally to go ahead, 15-11. The Rams pushed their lead to seven points, 22-15 before closing the set with a 25-20 win.

The second set was much closer, but in the end, the Rams showed their toughness to pull out the victory. After playing to a 15-15 tie to begin the set, the two teams battled back and forth. It was when the score was tied, 21-21 that the Rams would pull away with four straight points, including back-to-back kills from Holland.

The third set was another tough battle with the Rams pulling away late to take the victory. Once again, the Rams played to a 15-15 tie and fell behind, 15-17. From there, it was all WSSU with a 7-3 run to close out the set.

With the win, the Rams improve to 21-7 overall. The team will return to action tomorrow when they take on the Shawl Lady Bears in a 3:30 p.m. match at the Multipurpose Center on the campus of Virginia State University.
