HARTSVILLE, SC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (0-1) kicked off the 2018 season with a hard-fought three-set loss to the Coker Cobras (1-0) in the opening match of the Coker/FMU Fall Invitational. The Rams gave a strong effort in the match, but the team struggled to find its bearings early in the season.
As a team, the Rams had a solid offensive effort despite being hampered by some miscues. The Rams totaled 22 kills in the match, but were hampered by 22 hitting errors. WSSU junior outside hitter Ytae Cobb led the way for the Rams with 11 kills in the mach. She was the only Ram to reach double-digit kills in the match. Three more Rams totaled three kills each as well. Defensively, freshman libero Myra Wallace led the way with 13 digs in the match.
The Rams got the match started with a hot early start in the opening set, but some late miscues cost the team in the set. WSSU jumped out to a 4-2 early lead. However, the home team Cobras answered with a run that left the Rams trailing, before allowing a 10-2 run to the Cobras that left WSSU trailing, 12-6. The Rams would mount a rally of their own, cutting their deficit down to just three points, 12-15 after a kill from sophomore setter Brittany Carpenter. Unfortunately, the Rams could get no closer as the Cobras pulled away late to leave the Rams with the 25-17 opening set loss.
The second set told a similar story with the Rams once against jumping out to an early lead before a late rally from the Cobras left the Rams with their second set loss. Once again, it was the Rams in control early when a Cobb kill capped a 5-1 lead by the Rams. However, the Rams allowed another Coker run that left the Rams trailing, 8-14. WSSU fell behind by as many as 12 points, 12-24. The Rams would kick off a late rally with back-to-back points, but Coker ended the set with a kill to seal the 25-14 set loss for the Rams
The third set saw the Rams' struggle continue. A service ace from sophomore setter Brittany Carpenter to open the set was the sole moment that the Rams held the lead as the team took the 25-8 loss.
With the loss, the Rams open the season with an 0-1 record. The Rams would go on to complete the day when they took on the Emmanuel (Ga.) Lions in a 5:00 p.m. match.
