WSSU Rams Cruise To Double Header Sweep

WINSTON-SALEM, NC –  WSSU swept a double header this afternoon from the Lincoln Lions, behind the home runs of Ivan Acuna and Michael McNamara, and got solid pitching to cruise to a 14-1 and 9-1 wins today at BB&T Ballpark.

With the wins, WSSU improves to 14-11 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA, while Lincoln falls to 5-15 overall and 1-4       in the CIAA.

In game one, WSSU would be able to get a couple of runs home in the fourth inning. Ivan Acuna would double down three left field line, allowing Emilio Abreu to score. Later in the inning Acuna would score on a wild pitch to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.

The Rams busted the game open in the fifth, when they would score seven runs, on seven hits and one Lion error. After a John Garcia single and an Emilio Abreu double, Landon Steiner singled to left field, scoring Garcia and Abreu. Randal Ortiz would single, and Michael McNamara would hit a home run to left field, scoring three runs. Willie McCrae would reach on an error, and Randy Norris followed that up with a triple to right center, scoring McCrae.

Lincoln would put up their first run in the sixth inning, cutting the score to 9-1.

The Rams would salt the game away in the sixth, when Ivan Acuna would hit a two -run home run, and John Garcia would double, scoring three runs to give WSSU the final score of 14-1.

Ivan Acuna went 3 for 3 with 3 runs batted in and 3 runs scored. John Garcia finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and 3 runs batted in. Michael McNamara went 1 for 1 with 3 runs batted in and one run scored. Landon Steiner was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in, while Randy Norris went 2 for 5 with a run scored and a run batted in and Randal Ortiz went 1 for 3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Willie McCrae finished 1 for 4 with two runs scored.

Kanoa Hironaka picked up the win going 5.0 innings allowing four hits and two walks. He strike out three on the day. Garrison Roy pitched two innings out of the bullpen, allowing one hit, one run and one walk while striking out two.

In game number two on the day, the Rams got going early, as they were able to score six times in the first inning, taking the wind out of the sails of the Lincoln Lions.

Randy Norris singled and promptly stole second base and third. Brandon Ford grounded out, but picked up the run batted in when Norris scored. Emilio Abreu and John Garcia would single, and Landon Steiner would double to left center scoring both Abreu and Garcia. After a Randal Ortiz walk, Michael McNamara would homer  to left field, scoring three runs and giving WSSU a commanding 6-0 advantage.

WSSU kept swinging hot bats in the second inning, when Brandon Ford walked then stole second. Ivan Acuna would hit his second home run of the day, a deep blast to left center field to give the Rams an 8-0 lead.

Lincoln would push across a run in the third inning, on a hit.

Winston-Salem State would score a run in the fourth inning, when Ivan Acuna would hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Brandon Ford to score, and closing out all the scoring in the game, at 9-1.

Ivan Acuna and Michael McNamara led the way with 3 runs batted in each, and Acuna going 1 for 2 with a run scored and McNamara finishing 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Landon Steiner went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. John Garcia went 1 for 2 with a run scored and Brandon Ford finished 1 for 3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Emilio Abreu and Randy Norris each went 1 for 4 with a run scored. Randal Ortiz finished 1 for 2 with a run scored.
