Time Runs Out on Rams in 66-61 Loss at #17 Morehouse in CIAA/SIAC Challenge

ATLANTA, GA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (0-2) staged a big second half comeback, but the effort was not enough as the Rams took a 66-61 loss to the #17 Morehouse Maroon Tigers (1-0) at the CIAA/SIAC Challenge, Friday evening. After taking a halftime deficit at halftime, the Rams scored 41 second half points, but it was not quite enough as the team finished the day with the loss.

The Rams played a solid game in the loss. As a team, the Rams shot a solid 42.1% (24-of-67) from the floor and pulled in 43 rebounds, 12 more than Morehouse. Senior forward Jamel McAllister led the way for the Rams with 15 points and seven rebounds in the game while fellow senior forward William Crandell added 14 points with seven rebounds as well. Junior guard Robert Colon added 11 points.

The first half was a tough one for the Rams as the team struggled to put points on the scoreboard. After keeping the game close through the first 10 minutes of the half, the Rams trailed 15-12 after a jumper from Colon with 9:51 left in the first half. From there, the Rams were outscored 22-5 in the remaining minutes of the half to trail, including being held scoreless for the final three minutes of the half. The effort left the Rams trailing, 34-20 heading into the locker room at halftime.

The second half told a much different story for the Rams as the team found its offensive groove. Early in the half, the Rams made an offensive push, but Morehouse kept pace with the Rams and left the team's deficit at 15 points, 46-31 with 12:24 left to play. It was then that the Rams would kick things into gear. Senior guard Andrew Lopez kicked things off when he hit a three-pointer at the 12:17 mark. From there, the Rams went on an 8-2 run to cut their deficit down to single digits, 48-39 after a pair of McAllister free throws with 8:09 left to play. Later in the half, the Rams found themselves trailing by double digits once again, 60-47 with 4:11 left to play. It was then that the Rams staged a furious comeback effort. The team went on a 14-6 run in the final four minutes of the game. The run included a Colon three-pointer and a big dunk from McAllister. Unfortunately, the team comeback effort was a little too late as the Rams ended the day with the 66-61 loss.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 0-2 to start the season. The Rams will return to action, tomorrow when they take on the Fort Valley State Wildcats in a 2:00 p.m. game.
