WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-14, 5-11 CIAA) had one of their best performances of the season when the team took a 66-50 win over the Fayetteville State Broncos (6-17, 5-11 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Rams put on a show for the near-capacity crowd at the C.E. Gaines Center.
The Rams took the win behind one of their best defensive performances of the season. However, the team put on a solid offensive effort that should not be overlooked. As a team, the Rams shot 51.1% (24-of-47) from the floor in the game while holding the Broncos to shooting just 28.1% (16-of-57) from the floor. WSSU senior forward William Crandell led the way for the Rams with 19 points and eight rebounds in the game. Junior guard Robert Colon added 18 points.
The Rams controlled the game from the very beginning, including a dominant first half. The Rams opened the half with a huge 17-0 run to open the game and held the Broncos without a field goal until the 11:36 mark in the first half. From there, the Rams remained in control for the remainder of the game. The team went ahead by as many as 20 points, 23-3. In the final minutes of the half, the Rams allowed the Broncos to get into an offensive groove, but the team would never give up the lead as they took a 33-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half looked like more of the same for the Rams as the team continued to hold off the Broncos who kept trying to get back into the game. However, the Rams would not cooperate. The Rams allowed the Broncos to come to within 12 points, 37-25 with 15:16 left. However, the Rams would never let go of their lead as the team pushed their advantage and then kept their lead for the remainder of the game and cruised to the 66-50 win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 10-14 overall and 5-11 in CIAA play. The team also improves to 4-6 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Rams will return to action, Wednesday evening when the team hosts the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in a 7:30 p.m. game.
