Lady Rams Defense Keys 4-2 Win Over Pfeiffer

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (15-9) played some clutch defense to stop a late rally and took a 4-2 win over the Pfeiffer Falcons (11-17), Tuesday afternoon. After jumping out to an early 4-0 lead, the Lady Rams clamped down to hold off a late rally by the Falcons and took their seventh straight win.

As a team, the Lady Rams held the Falcons to just two solo home runs in the game. For the game, the Lady Rams allowed just seven hits and had no fielding errors. Offensively, the Lady Rams scored four runs on five hits with all four runs coming in the first four innings of the game. WSSU senior outfielder Tanaya Pettus led the way for the Lady Rams with a two-for-two effort at the plate with two RBI and a walk. Junior shortstop Monet Daly went two-for-four at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.

The Lady Rams opened the game on a high note when Pettus hit an RBI double in the first inning that scored freshman outfielder Chyna Riley. The team followed the effort in the second inning when Daly hit an RBI single that scored senior designated player Andreya O'Brien and junior outfielder Kiah Ruffin hit an RBI groundout that scored freshman Jada Johnson. The team capped its scoring effort in the fourth inning when Pettus hit an RBI single to first base that scored Daly.

The WSSU defense took center stage in the seventh inning when catcher Francesca Edgerton and Daly teamed up to catch a Pfeiffer baserunner stealing. The out was followed a Falcons popout and a solo home run. The out, combined with the pop fly out took away the threat of a sacrifice hit that could have allowed the Falcons to tie the game. However, the WSSU defense shut the door and took home the win.

WSSU freshman pitcher Mercedes Hargett (6-5) took the pitching win, going 6.2 innings and allowing just seven hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts and no walks. WSSU freshman Chyna Riley came in for the save and led the Lady Rams to the win.
