RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (17-10, 10-1 CIAA) broke out their offense in a big way, Friday when the team took a 16-5 win over the Shaw Lady Bears (1-19). With the effort, the Lady Rams have remained undefeated in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division play.
With the effort, the Lady Rams continued a string of offensive breakouts in divisional play as the team has outscored CIAA Southern Division foes 59-6 in their last four divisional games. On Friday, the Lady Rams scored 16 runs on 10 hits and took advantage of four Shaw fielding errors. After opening the game with a pair of first inning runs, the Lady Rams added 11 runs in the second and third innings, including six in the second inning. After allowing two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, the Lady Rams capped the game off by outscoring their foes, 3-1 in the fifth inning.
WSSU junior outfielder Kiah Ruffin led the batting effort for the Lady Rams with a three-for-three effort at the plate with a double, three runs scored, and a game-high five RBI. She also added a pair of walks. Junior infielder Monet Daly added a two-for-four effort with four runs scored and three RBI with two walks.
Freshman pitcher Chyna Riley (5-2) took the pitching victory going five and two thirds innings with five hits allowed and five earned runs scored. She also recorded eight strikeouts and allowed just two walks.
The Lady Rams won't have long to rest as the team will return to action tomorrow when they head to Fayetteville, N.C. to take on the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos.
