Lady Rams' Rally Falls Short in 6-3 Loss at Saint Augustine's

RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (21-11, 11-2 CIAA) made some costly errors in a tough 6-4 road loss to the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons (12-17, 7-4 CIAA), Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Rams committed three uncharacteristic fielding errors, two of which directly led to SAU scores in the tough road loss. The loss ended the Lady Rams' six-game winning streak and gave the team just its second Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) loss of the season and its first CIAA Southern Division loss.

The loss came in spite of a strong effort by the Lady Rams as the team scored all three runs in the final three innings of play, but the team could not score enough to pull out the victory. As a team, the Lady Rams finished the game with seven hits. WSSU freshman Tiffany Massey led the way with a one-for-three effort at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Fellow freshman outfielder Chyna Riley added a two-for-two performance at the plate as well. Senior designated player Andreya O'Brien scored the only othe WSSU run with a one-for-two batting performance.

The Lady Rams fell behind in the third inning when a WSSU outfield error allowed an SAU score. The Lady Rams answered in the fifth inning when O'Brien hit an RBI sacrifice groundout to the pitcher that scored Massey and tied the game. The Lady Rams allowed three SAU scores in the bottom of the fifth inning to fall behind 4-1 and two more in the sixth inning. WSSU made an attempted rally in the seventh inning when freshman pitcher Mercedes Hargett hit an RBI sacrifice fly which scored Massey. The effort was followed by an RBI single by junior infielder Monet Daly that scored O'Brien and pulled the Lady Rams within three runs of the Lady Falcons. However, the two scores were all that the Lady Rams could muster as the team finished the day with the tough loss.

Hargett (9-5) took the pitching loss as she threw all seven innings of the game and allowed 10 hits to the Lady Falcons. She added five strikeouts and allowed just one walk.
