Lady Rams Push Johnson C. Smith for 11-3 Six-Inning Victory

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (23-11, 13-2 CIAA) broke out late for a big 11-3 win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (12-19, 8-7 CIAA). The Lady Rams scored 10 runs in four innings to take home the victory in the team's annual Strike Out Cancer game.

The Lady Rams definitely brought their offense for the victory as the team scored 11 runs on 17 hits in the game and took advantage of a pair of Golden Bulls fielding errors. WSSU senior second base Tanaya Pettus led the way for the Lady Rams with a scorching hot performance at the plate. She recorded a two-for-two effort with a walk, a double, and a home run. With the effort she finished the game with two runs scored and three RBI. Junior Katrina Bartlett added a three for four effort with a run scored and two RBI. Fellow junior Tiffany Massey was also three-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Lady Rams got off to a slow start when they fell behind, 3-1 in the third inning. But the team soon had an answer when Pettus hit a two-run home run that tied the game. The big score was followed by an RBI sacrifice bunt by freshman designated player Jada Johnson that gave the Lady Rams a 4-3 lead. From there, the Lady Rams kept on rolling in the fourth inning when junior Kiah Ruffin hit an RBI double that scored junior infielder Monet Daly. The hit was followed by an RBI double by Pettus that scored Ruffin.

With the 6-3 lead heading into the sixth inning, the Lady Rams put the game away with a five-run sixth inning that ended the game. Bartlett kicked things off with a two-RBI double, which was followed by an RBI single by Tiffany Massey. Fellow senior Francesca Edgerton added an RBI double whie was followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman Mercedes Hargett that sealed the WSSU victory.

Hargett (11-6) took the pitching victory when she went all six innings with five hits allowed, just three walks, and nine strikeouts.
