MISENHEIMER, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (1-7) picked up their first win in style when the team shut down the Pfeiffer Falcons (7-6) for a 1-0 victory. The Lady Rams coupled some timely offense with some stellar defense to pick up their first win of the season, Friday afternoon.
The Lady Rams had a tough time getting hits in the game as the team totaled just five, but they only needed one run to take the win, thanks to some quality defensive play. Five Lady Rams recorded one hit each in the win. Senior shortstop Katrina Bartlett, senior thirdbase Lauren Beaver, senior outfielder Kiah Ruffin, sophomore infielder Jada Johnson, and freshman outfielder Anna Marino all recorded singles for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Rams needed just one run to take the win as sophomore infielder Allison Woodbury drove in Ruffin on a second-inning sacrifice fly for the only run of the game. With the lead in hand, the Lady Rams turned to their defense to take home the win as they held the Falcons scoreless despite allowing eight hits in the game, including a double. The Lady Rams forced the Falcons to strand seven runners on base to take the victory.
WSSU sophomore pitcher Mercedes Hargett (1-4) took the pitching victory, going all seven innings with no runs allowed and eight hits. She also added 10 strikeouts for her first win of the season.
