Lady Rams Struggle in 2-0 Loss at Albany State

ALBANY, GA – Struggles at the plate proved costly to the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-9) in a tough 2-0 loss at Albany State (5-5), Monday afternoon. The Lady Rams could not seem to get things into gear offensively when they managed just two hits in the shutout loss.

As a team, the Lady Rams ran into some staunch defense from Albany State with only three WSSU players reaching base in the loss. Sophomore second base Chyna Riley went one-for-three from the plate while senior outfielder Kiah Ruffin went one-for-two from the plate with a walk as well. Though the hits were hard to come by for the Lady Rams, the team only had two strikeouts for the game.

Though the Lady Rams had their share of offensive struggles, the team played a solid defensive game as they allowed just Albany State runs in the game. A fourth-inning RBI double and a sixth-inning home run were all that the Lady Rams allowed in the game, but with the team's struggles at the plate,  it was all that Albany State needed to hand WSSU the loss.

WSSU sophomore pitcher Mercedes Hargett (2-5) took the pitching loss as she went all six innings of the game and allowed just two runs on six hits. She also recorded five strikeouts and allowed just two walks.

The Lady Rams will remain on the road for their next action when they head to Hickory, N.C. to take on the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, Wednesday. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to
