Lady Rams Show Up for Big 5-2 Win at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-9) got a key victory, Thursday afternoon when the team took a 5-2 win at Lenoir-Rhyne (17-5). The Lady Rams took the win after some great play on both sides of the ball as they scored five runs while holding the Bears to just two runs.

As a team, the Lady Rams combined some timely hitting along with some stellar defense to pick up the win over one of their toughest opponents of the season. The Lady Rams made the most of their hitting when the team scored five runs on eight total hits in the game. Defensively, the Lady Rams also turned in some timely efforts as they held the Bears to just two runs on six hits allowed in the game. Freshman catcher Melissa Carillo led the way for the Lady Rams with a three-for-four performance at the plate with an RBI. Sophomore Katherine Zimmer did the most damage with three RBI and a run scored on two hits in three at-bats. Senior shortstop Katrina Bartlett also had a strong day with two hits in three at-bats with two runs scored.

The Lady Rams did the bulk of their damage early before scoring late to seal the victory. The Lady Rams broke things open with three second-inning runs. After allowing a Lenoir-Rhyne first inning home run, the Lady Rams answered in the third inning when sophomore Jada Johnson hit an RBI bunt that drove in senior outfielder Kiah Ruffin. Zimmer followed the score with another RBI bunt single that scored Bartlett. Carillo rounded out the inning with an RBI single up the middle that scored Zimmer. In the third inning, Lenoir-Rhyne added another score, but the Lady Rams would allow no more. Zimmer would strike once again to put the game away when she hit a two-RBI single to right center field that scored Bartlett and sophomore pitcher Mercedes Hargett.

In addition to scoring a run, Hargett (3-5) took the pitching victory when she went all seven innings with two earned runs allowed on six hits. She also added six strikeouts and two walks.
