WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (10-17) ran into some late struggles when the team took an 8-2 loss to the #21 Anderson (S.C.) Trojans (29-9), Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rams had a solid effort, but the team could not quite get the runs they needed in the tough loss.
The Lady Rams got a strong early start to the game, but some late offensive and defensive struggles proved to be too much for the Lady Rams to overcome in the tough loss. After allowing a first-inning run to the Trojans, the Lady Rams took a 2-1 first-inning lead when sophomore outfielder Katherine Zimmer hit a two-RBI single that scored seniors Katrina Bartlett and Kiah Ruffin. The Lady Rams would not manage to score any more in the game, but the team's lead dissipated with pair of second-inning runs and a third-inning run by the Trojans left WSSU trailing, 4-2. The game remained within reach for the Lady Rams until a key fourth-inning error led to four Anderson (S.C.) runs and left the Lady Rams trailing, 8-2. From there, the Lady Rams could not score and finished the day with the loss.
The loss came in spite of some solid hitting by the Lady Rams. As a team, the team totaled nine hits in the game. Zimmer led the effort with a three-for-three effort and two RBI. Senior short stop Katrina Bartlett added a two-for-four effort with a run scored.
Sophomore Chyna Riley (1-9) took the pitching loss, going all seven innings and allowing eight runs (four earned) on 11 hits. She recorded a pair of strikeouts with five walks.
The Lady Rams will return to action on April 17th when the team hosts the Barton Bulldogs. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
