Lady Rams Pull Away Late for 8-3 Win Over Bluefield State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (17-19) broke out late to take an 8-3 win over the Bluefield State Blues, Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Rams turned to a strong offensive effort to pull away late for their sixth straight win.

After playing to a 2-2 tie in the third inning, the Lady Rams outscored the Blues 8-1 in the remaining five and a half innings to claim the victory.

As a team, the Lady Rams had a great offensive effort with 11 total hits. The team also scored eight earned runs in the victory. Sophomore outfielder Katherine Zimmer led the Lady Rams to the win with a three-for-four performance at the plate with four RBI and a run scored. Sophomore second base Chyna Riley went two-for-three at the plate with a run scored. Sophomore pitcher Mercedes Hargett was one-for-one with a home run and two runs scored. She was also walked three times. Senior third base Katrina Bartlett added a two-for-four performance with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored.

The Lady Rams' offense saw a solid opening effort in the first inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. It was Hargett who did the honors with a two-run homer that also drove in senior second base Monet Daly. After allowing a third-inning run to the Blues, the Lady Rams broke things open in the bottom of the inning with four runs. Zimmer got things going when she hit a two-RBI double that scored Hargett and freshman catcher Melissa Carillo. Bartlett followed the effort with a two-RBI home run of her own that scored Zimmer as well. The effort left the Lady Rams on top 6-2. Both teams turned up their defensive efforts with neither team scoring until the bottom of the sixth-inning. Zimmer hit another two-RBI double to drive in Riley and Daly. With the lead intact, the Lady Rams kept up their strong defensive effort as they allowed just one seventh-inning run to the Blues and sealed the 8-3 victory.

With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 17-19 and will return to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play, Friday afternoon at Twin City Park when they host the Saint Augustine's Falcons in a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader. The games will feature a rematch from last season's CIAA championship game.
