WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (16-19) scored their fifth straight win when the team took an 8-0 win over the Bluefield State Blues (5-20), Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Rams turned to some strong defense to take the non-conference win over an aggressive Blues team.
The Lady Rams scored their runs in bunches as the team recorded four first inning runs and closed out the game with four sixth-inning runs.
The Lady Rams took the win behind a great overall effort with some timely hitting and some quality defense. As a team, the Lady Rams totaled nine hits in the game while allowing just five to the Blues. WSSU sophomore pitcher Chyna Riley led the way for the Lady Rams with a three-for-four effort at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Fellow sophomore Mercedes Hargett went one-for-two with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Senior shortstop Katrina Bartlett added a two-for-four effort with two runs scored, and RBI and a triple.
The Lady Rams kicked the game off in style with four first inning runs. Bartlett took advantage of a Bluefield State passed ball for the first score of the game. The Lady Rams struck again when another pair of Bluefield State fielding errors led to a score by Riley. Freshman Anna Marino added another score for the Lady Rams when freshman second base Jada Johnson forced another Bluefield State error to score freshman Anna Marino.
From there, the Lady Rams went scoreless against some quality BSU defense before the sixth inning. Hargett got things started with a solo home run to start the inning. Bartlett added an RBI single that scored Johnson. The Lady Rams closed out the game when Riley hit a two-RBI single that scored Bartlett and senior second base Monet Daly.
