RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (21-20) definitely brought their offense when the team took an impressive 15-5 win over the Virginia Union Panthers (15-10), Thursday in the opening round of the 2015 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tournament. The Lady Rams took the win behind a strong offensive performance as the team scored 15 runs on nine hits to take the victory.
The Lady Rams made the most of nearly every offensive opportunity in the game as the team scored at least one run in four of the five innings of the game. After scoring four opening inning runs, the Lady Rams added six second inning runs to go ahead 10-0. Both teams went scoreless in the third inning before Virginia Union added five fourth-inning runs, including a grand slam home run that cut the WSSU lead in half, 10-5. The Lady Rams answered in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore third base Mercedes Hargett hit a solo home run to go ahead, 11-5. From there, the Lady Rams added a pair of fifth-inning runs before sophomore pitcher Katherine Zimmer hit a walk-off three-run home run that ended the game, 15-5.
As a team, the Lady Rams totaled nine hits in the game with Hargett leading the way. She went three-for-three at the plate with a home run, four runs scored, and two RBI. Sophomore Chyna Riley went two-for-three with three runs scored and an RBI. Zimmer rounded out the effort with a one-for-four performance with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI.
Zimmer (5-0) took the pitching win, going three innings with three runs allowed (three earned). She added a strikeout on four walks. Riley came in for an inning and allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout and a walk. Hargett also came in for an inning and recorded a strikeout with no hits allowed.
With the win, the Lady Rams advance in the winner's bracket of the 2015 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament. The Lady Rams will advance to take on the Chowan Hawks in a 1:30 p.m. game.
