PEMBROKE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (0-2) had seven hits, but the team could not get the runners across the plate as the team took a 7-3 loss to the Concord Mountain Lions (2-0) at the Campbell Oil/Minuteman Invitational hosted by UNC-Pembroke. The Rams managed just three runs on seven hits while allowing seven Mountain Lion runs on nine hits in the game.
The Rams took the loss behind a solid team effort with seven hits in the game. Unfortunately, the Rams committed three fielding errors that led to three runs by the Mountain Lions. WSSU junior outfielder Idaysha Quinones led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three performance at the plate with two runs scored while junior Chyna Riley was also two-for-three from the plate with a pair of singles. Junior pitcher Mercedes Hargett recorded the sole extra-base hit with a double.
After allowing a first inning run to the Mountain Lions, the Rams answered in the third inning when freshman Taonya Stanley hit an RBI ground out to score Quinones. However, Concord answered with a pair of third-inning runs of their own to leave the Rams trailing once again, 3-1. The Rams struck again in the fifth inning when Hargett hit an RBI double to scored Quinones for the second time in the game. In the bottom of the fifth inning, a WSSU throwing error allowed another Concord score as well as an RBI single by the Mountain Lions. After allowing another sixth-inning run to the Mountain Lions, the Rams staged a late rally when freshman Destiny Snipes hit an RBI groundout that scored sophomore catcher Melissa Carillo. Unfortunately, it was all that the Rams could muster as the team took the 7-3 loss.
WSSU junior pitcher Mercedes Hargett (0-1) took the pitching loss as she pitched all six innings of the game. She finished the game with seven runs allowed (four earned). She also recorded four strikeouts in the game.
