WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (0-5) could not quite find the hits when the team took a tough 8-0 loss to the Davis & Elkins Senators (1-0), Friday afternoon. Though the Rams were aggressive at the plate, the team could not get their offense in gear as the team took their second shutout loss of the season.
The two teams played a solid defensive game despite the final score. WSSU held the Senators scoreless for five of the seven innings in the game. The Rams allowed five fifth-inning runs and three seventh inning runs to take the loss.
WSSU freshman first base Mesha Jones recorded the sole WSSU hit of the game when she hit a fifth-inning double to center field. Jones went one-for-two at the plate with a double and a walk. She accounted for two of the three WSSU baserunners as junior pitcher Mercedes Hargett also drew a walk.
Hargett (0-3) took the pitching loss, going all seven innings of the game. She allowed eight runs in the game (six earned). However, she did record five strikeouts in the game.
The two teams would return to action to complete the doubleheader later in the day. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
