MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (2-8) put their power on display, but it was not quite enough as the team took a 9-4 loss to the Felician Golden Falcons (3-3), Sunday afternoon. The Rams took the loss in spite of a pair of WSSU home runs in the game.
As a team, the Rams totaled six hits in the game, but the team was outgunned by the Golden Falcons who totaled 19 hits in the game. WSSU junior outfielde Idaysha Quinones led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three performance at the plate. Junior pitcher Katherine Zimmer went one-for-three from the plate with a run scored and three RBI in the game. Fellow junior third base Mercedes Hargett went one-for-two with a home run, a run scored, an RBI, and a walk.
After allowing two first inning runs to the Golden Falcons, the Rams struck back in the bottom of the first inning when Zimmer hit an inside-the-park three-run home run to put the team on top, 3-2. After allowing two more Felician runs in the second inning and another in the third, Hargett capped the WSSU scoring with a third inning solo home run. That would be all the scoring that the Rams could manage, however, as the team allowed four more Golden Falcon runs to take the 9-4 loss.
Zimmer (0-1) took the pitching loss for the Rams when she went all four innings for the Rams and allowed eight runs (six earned). Junior Chyna Riley came in for three innings of work and allowed just one run (one earned).
With the loss, the Rams fall to 2-8 on the season. The team will return to action, Wednesday, March 2nd when the team hosts the Brevard Tornados. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
