WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (3-8) got their first home win of the season when the team took a 2-1 win over the Brevard College Tornados (5-8), Wednesday afternoon. After scoring a pair of second inning runs, the Rams held the Tornados to just one run to take the win.
In addition to some solid defense, the Rams added some timely hitting to claim the victory. As a team, the Rams totaled five hits in the game with sophomore Katherine Zimmer leading the way with a one-for-two performance at the plate with a run scored. Freshman shortstop Jasmine Holloman added a one-for-three performance with a run scored. Junior outfielder Idaysha Quinones recorded the sole RBI of the game for the Rams as well. Defensively, the Rams held Brevard to just six hits in the game and just one run to take the victory.
The Rams scored both of their runs in the second inning when junior second base Chyna Riley reached base on a fielding error that scored Zimmer. Quinones added an RBI single that scored Holloman. After the two scores, a fourth-inning home run by Brevard was the only score that the Rams allowed.
WSSU junior pitcher Mercedes Hargett (1-5) took the pitching victory when she went all seven innings with six hits allowed and just one run (one earned). She also recorded seven strikeouts.
