RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (6-10) could not quite find the answers when the team took a 9-1 loss to the Queens (N.C.) Royals (11-9) on the second day of the Shaw University Softball Challenge, Saturday. The Rams gave a great effort in the game, but the team could not match the overpowering Royals in the game.
The Rams struggled early with five runs allowed in the first inning, followed by two runs each in the second and fourth innings to take the loss. The Rams scored their sole run of the game during the second inning when a double from sophomore left fielder Katherine Zimmer was followed by an RBI single from sophomore designated player Samantha Gibbs.
As a team, the Rams managed just three hits in the game while the Royals totaled 17 hits. Zimmer led the way for the Rams as she went one-for-three from the plate with a double and a run scored while Gibbs added a one-for-two effort with an RBI. Junior centerfielder Idaysha Quinones added a double as well.
WSSU junior Chyna Riley took the pitching loss, going all seven innings with nine runs (nine earned) allowed on 17 hits. She finished the game with four strikeouts.
The Rams will return to action tomorrow when the team closes out the Shaw University Softball Challenge with a game against the Mansfield Mounties. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
