RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (12-12, 1-0 CIAA) got Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play in dramatic fashion when they took a 3-2 win over the Virginia Union Lady Panthers (7-7, 0-1 CIAA) at the 2016 CIAA Softball Round Up hosted by Shaw University. After taking a 2-2 tie into the seventh-inning, the Rams scored late and played some shutdown defense to claim their first conference win of the season.
The Rams had a solid effort on both sides of the ball with three runs scored on 11 hits while holding the Lady Panthers to just two hits and two runs in the game. WSSU junior pitcher Mercedes Hargett led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three performance at the plate with two runs scored. Freshman Taonya Stanley added a two-for-four performance with an RBI. Freshman shortstop Jasmine Holloman went three-for-three in the game.
The Rams struck first in the game when Holloman hit a second inning RBI single to score junior centerfielder Idaysha Quinones. Stanely kept things going in the third inning when she hit an RBI triple to score Hargett in the second inning and left the Rams on top, 2-0. Virginia Union would benefit from a pair of WSSU errors to score two third inning runs and tied the game. It was in the seventh inning that the Rams would score the game-winning run when sophomore Samantha Gibbs hit an RBI single that scored Hargett and gave the Rams the 3-2 lead. The WSSU defense would close things out for good in the seventh inning and sealed the victory.
Hargett (8-7) got the pitching win when she held Virginia Union to just two turns (none earned) on just three hits in the game. She also recorded eight strikeouts with one walk in the game.
With the win, the Rams improve to 12-12 and 1-0 in CIAA play. The team would go on to face the Virginia State Lady Trojans in their second game at the 2016 CIAA Softball Round Up.
