RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (16-13, 5-1 CIAA) closed out the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Round Up in style when the team took a 3-0 win over the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs (8-10, 4-2 CIAA), Sunday.
The Rams took the win behind a great defensive effort as they held Bowie State scoreless in spite of allowing six hits. The Rams made the most of their batting efforts as they scored all three runs on just five hits in the game. Sophomore right fielder Katherine Zimmer went one-for-two at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore catcher Melissa Carrillo went one-for-three with an RBI. Freshman outfielder Destiny Snipes went one-for-two with a run scored as well.
The Rams broke into the scoring column in the fourth inning when Snipes scored on a BSU passed ball to put the team ahead, 1-0. Carillo added an RBI single to center field in the fifth inning that scored Zimmer. Finally, the Rams closed out their scoring effort when Zimmer hit an RBI single of her own to center field to score fellow sophomore outfielder Anna Marino.
WSSU junior pitcher Mercedes Hargett (10-8) took the pitching win when she went all seven innings with no runs allowed on just six hits. She also finished the game with nine strikeouts and just two walks.
After playing six games in three days, the Rams will get a bit of a break as the team will return to action, Friday, when they host the UNC-Pembroke Braves, Friday afternoon in the team's annual Strike Out Breast Cancer Game at 1:00 p.m. at Twin City Field.
