WILSON, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (20-16) struggled in a 3-0 road loss to the Barton Bulldogs (12-18), Wednesday afternoon. The Rams were on the wrong side of a stellar pitching performance in the loss as the team managed just one hit in the tough shutout loss.
WSSU junior second base Chyna Riley recorded the only hit of the game for the Rams when she hit a single. Defensively, the Rams compiled their struggles with a pair of fielding errors and allowed 10 hits to the Bulldogs.
Though the Rams struggled offensively, the team played some solid defense, holding Barton to just three runs on 10 hits in the game. After allowing a run in the first and second innings respectively, the Rams tightened up their defensive effort, holding the Bulldogs without another run until the sixth inning.
WSSU junior Mercedes Hargett (12-10) took the pitching loss with three runs allowed (three earned). She recorded two strikeouts with three walks.
The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader later in the day. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
