CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (22-19, 9-3 CIAA) fell victim to a late rally in a 4-2 road loss to the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (10-12, 9-5 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. After taking a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning, the Rams allowed three sixth-inning runs to the Golden Bulls to take their second Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division loss of the season.
The loss came in spite of a solid overall effort by the Rams. As a team, the Rams totaled nine hits in the game, but struggled to get runs across the plate as they finished the game with just two runs. WSSU junior pitcher Katherine Zimmer led the way for the Rams with a two-for-four batting performance with a run scored. Junior second base Chyna Riley added a two-for-three performance with a run scored.
The runs were at a premium in the game with the Rams and the Golden Bulls both playing some solid defense in the game. It was WSSU who struck first, however, when freshman catcher Tiarra Delaney hit an RBI double to center field to score Zimmer in the second inning. The Golden Bulls would tie the game with a fourth-inning score, however, before freshman first base Mesha Jones put WSSU on top once again with an RBI single to score Riley and put the Rams on top, 2-1 heading into the sixth inning. Unfortunately, it was then that Johnson C. Smith staged a late rally that included a three-run home run that left the Rams trailing, 2-4. WSSU was unable to score in the seventh inning and finished the day with the loss.
Riley (7-7) took the pitching loss, going 2.2 innings with three runs allowed (three earned) on three hits. She also added two strikeouts with no walks. Zimmer earned the pitching start and went 3.1 innings and finished with one run allowed (one earned) on five hits. She added a strikeout with no walks.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 22-19 and 9-3 in CIAA play. The team also falls to 4-2 and into second place in the CIAA Southern Division. The Rams will return to action, Monday when the team hosts the Pfeiffer Falcons in a Monday afternoon doubleheader.
