RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (24-21, 11-3 CIAA) turned to their defense to pick up a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division win, Saturday afternoon at Worthdale Park in Raleigh, N.C. The Rams held the aggressive hitting Falcons to just one run on six hits to secure a 4-1 victory and improve to 11-3 in CIAA play.
Though the WSSU defense stole the show, the Rams also played solid offensively to take the win. WSSU freshman outfielder Destiny Snipes led the way for the Rams with her second great batting effort of the day. She went two-for-three at the plate with a home run, a run scored, and an RBI in the game. Sophomore catcher Melissa Carillo also had a strong day at the plate, going two-for-two with a walk and a run scored.
The Rams played some solid defense for the entire game, but scattered their offensive efforts. After allowing an opening inning run to the Falcons, the Rams did not allow another SAU score in the game. Snipes would soon tie the game in the second inning with a solo home run. The Rams struck again in the fourth inning when junior pitcher Chyna Riley hit an RBI single that scored freshman outfielder Tiarra Delaney. Carillo would score as well later in the inning on a double steal. Freshman designated player Taonya Stanely closed out the scoring when she hit a seventh-inning sacrifice fly that scored junior first base Katherine Zimmer. From there, the Rams would play some close out defense to seal the 4-1 victory.
Riley (8-9) took the pitching victory when she went all seven innings and allowed just one run scored (one earned). She also recorded seven strikeouts, including striking out the side in the fourth inning.
With the win, the Rams improve to 24-21 overall and 11-3 in CIAA play. Most importantly, the team improves to 6-2 in CIAA Southern Division play and firmly into second place in the division standings. The Rams will close out the regular season when they return to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the Shaw Lady Bears.
