Rams Fade Late in 6-5 Loss to Anderson (S.C.)

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-18) gave it their all, but the team ran out of gas in a 6-5 loss to the aggressive Anderson (S.C.) Trojans, Sunday afternoon. After taking an early lead in the game, the Rams fell silent in the final innings to take the tough loss.

The Rams took control of the game early, but the team fell victim to a late rally by the Trojans. As a team, the Rams had a solid game, totaling nine hits, including a two-for-three performance with two RBI from freshman catcher Sydnee Brown and a two-for-three effort from sophomore outfielder Jasmine Holloman who also added a run scored. Senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett also had a two-run home run in the game.

Things looked good early for the Rams. It was WSSU who struck first when Hargett started things off with a two-run home run in the first inning that scored Holloman. After allowing Anderson (S.C.) to tie the game in the third inning, the Rams took the lead once again when Brown hit a two-RBI single that scored senior second base Chyna Riley and junior centerfielder Anna Marino and left the Rams on top, 4-2. The Trojans would tie the game once again, 4-4, with a pair of fourth inning runs before the Rams regained the lead when junior Tierra Delaney scored on an Anderson (S.C.) throwing error in the bottom of the fourth inning and kept the Rams ahead 5-4. Unfortunately, the Rams allowed a run in the fifth and sixth innings respectively to leave WSSU trailing, 6-5. The Rams fell silent for the final three innings of the games as the Rams fell short in the 6-5 loss.

Hargett (5-12) took the pitching loss behind a strong performance. She went all seven innings for the Rams and finished with six runs allowed (five earned) on eight hits. She also finished with six strikeouts and no walks.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 7-18 overall. The team would go on to complete the doubleheader with another game against the Trojans. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com
