MISENHEIMER, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-20) gave it their all, but the team came up just short in a dramatic 1-0 loss to the Pfeiffer Falcons (30-3), Tuesday afternoon. WSSU senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett turned in a stellar pitching performance, throwing a one-hitter for the game, but the Rams could not get any runs across the plate as the team took the tough road loss.
The game was an exciting defensive battle with both the Rams and Falcons making runs hard to come by. As a team, the Rams managed four hits in the pitching duel with Hargett going one-for-two with a double and a walk. Sophomore outfielder Jasmine Holloman, fellow sophomore short stop Destiny Snipes, and senior second base Chyna Riley each recorded a single as well.
The lone score of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning when a WSSU fielding error was followed by a walk and a walk off RBI single that ended the game and sealed the Rams' 1-0 loss.
Hargett (5-13) took the pitching loss after a great performance. She allowed just one hit in the game and finished with five strikeouts and just one walk.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 7-20 overall. The team would go on to complete the doubleheader against the Falcons. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
