Rams Homer Their Way to a 3-1 Win Over Johnson C. Smith

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (8-25, 4-4 CIAA) used the long ball to score their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division win, Saturday when the team took a 3-1 win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (11-13, 5-5 CIAA). The Rams needed just two swings of the bat to take the win with all three runs coming on home runs.

With their offense coming early in the game, the Rams turned to their defense to secure the victory. As a team, the Rams totaled just two hits in the game, but they were all the team needed. Junior catcher Tiarra Delaney led the way for the Rams with a one-for-three batting effort with a home run and two RBI. Sophomore outfielder Jasmine Holloman added a one-for-three effort with a home run.

The Rams struck early in the game and turned to their defense to claim the win. The Rams jumped out early when Holloman opened the game with a leadoff home run, followed by a two-run home run for Delaney that also scored senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett. The three runs were all the Rams needed as the team held JCSU to just one second inning run to secure the victory.

Hargett (6-16) took the pitching win, going all six innings with one run allowed (one earned) on three hits. She also recorded nine strikeouts in the game.

With the win, the Rams improve to 8-25 overall and 4-4 in CIAA play. More importantly, the Rams improve to 1-2 in CIAA Southern Division play. The two teams would return to complete the doubleheader later in the day.
