Rams Take 2-1 Loss to Top-Seeded Chowan to Open 2017 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament

PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (14-30) showed a lot of fight, but the team came up just short in a 2-1 loss to the top-seeded Chowan Hawks (33-18) in the opening round of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tournament. The Rams pushed the top team in the conference to their very limits in the tough loss.

Defense turned out to be the order of the day as the Rams and the Hawks combined for just four hits in the game. WSSU senior left fielder Chyna Riley led the way for the Rams, going three-for-four at the plate with a double and an RBI.

The runs were hard to come by for both teams as the Rams managed to get just one run across the plate. Chowan struck first with a first inning run, but the Rams answered in the third inning when Riley hit an RBI double that scored sophomore second base Jasmine Holloman. From there, the Rams could not manage another run, but the defense held up until the sixth inning when the team allowed a solo home run by the Hawks that turned out to be the game-winner.

WSSU senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett (10-20) took the pitching loss, going all six innings and allowing just one run (one earned) on four hits. She also recorded six strikeouts with just two walks.

With the loss, the Rams fall to the consolation bracket of the tournament where the team will face the host Virginia State Trojans in a 2:30 p.m. game at the Petersburg Sports Complex.
