Rams Take a 6-2 Win Over Virginia State to Advance in 2017 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament

PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (15-30) took a key 6-2 win over the host Virginia State Trojans (12-23) in the elimination round of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tournament, Thursday afternoon. The Rams broke out with a strong offensive effort and benefitted from some VSU miscues to advance to the second day of the tournament.

As a team, the Rams had a solid performance in the game, totaling nine hits and scoring six runs in the game. WSSU senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four performance at the plate with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI. Junior outfielder Tiarra Delaney added a two-for-four performance with a home run, a double, and two RBI.

The Rams took control of the game early and never looked back. The team struck in the second inning when sophomore outfielder Destiny Snipes hit an RBI groundout that scored Hargett. The Rams added another run when a VSU fielding error allowed junior designated hitter Samantha Gibbs to score the second run of the game. The Rams kept their scoring going in the third inning when Hargett and Delaney hit back-to-back solo home runs to leave WSSU on top, 4-0. A pair of WSSU fielding errors cost the Rams in the fourth inning, allowing the Trojans to score two runs, but the Rams would not allow the Trojans to get any closer. Senior third base Rebecca Demko scored on another VSU fielding error, followed by an RBI single from sophomore Jasmine Holloman that scored Delaney and capped the scoring in the Rams' 6-2 victory.

Hargett (11-20) took the pitching win, going all seven innings in the game. She finished with just two runs allowed (none earned) and added six strikeouts and no walks.

With the win, the Rams advance to the second day of the tournament and will face the Saint Augustine's Falcons in a 10:00 a.m. game at the Petersburg SportsPlex.
