WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-0) got the 2019 season started with a bang when the team took a 9-1 win over the Benedict Tigers (0-1) in game one of a doubleheader. The Rams definitely brought their offense to the game when the team hit three home runs to take the win.
The Rams had a great game both in the field and at the plate to take the victory. WSSU junior second base Daijah Chambers led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three batting performance with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored. Freshman third base Alleigh Himes added a two-for-three batting effort with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored. Freshman centerfielder Shauntaja Dedecker added a two-run home run as well.
It was in the second inning when the Rams really took things over. WSSU got four runs in the inning with Dedecker getting things started with a two-run home run to left field that was followed by another two-run home run from Chambers that left the Rams on top, 4-0. After allowing Benedict to answer, the Rams added to their lead with a two-run home run from Himes that gave the Rams a 6-1 lead. Senior third catcher Kortney Thomas added an RBI single that gave the Rams a 7-1 lead. The Rams padded their lead and put the game away with an RBI single from junior pitcher Erica Davis and an RBI single from Himes. From there, the Rams clamped down on defense to seal the 9-1 run-rule victory.
Davis (1-0) took the pitching win. She threw all five innings of the game and held the Tigers to just two hits and just one run. She also recorded two strikeouts and just one earned run.
With the win, the Rams open the season at 1-0. The two teams would go on to complete their doubleheader later in the day. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
