ACWORTH, GA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-1) kept their strong offensive day going when the team took a 6-1 win over the Kentucky State Thorobreds (1-2) at the HBCU DII Tournament, Saturday afternoon. The Rams had and early offensive breakout that pushed the team to the win with four of their six runs coming in the first inning of play.
The Rams had a strong day at the plate along with some quality defense to take the win. As a team, the Rams totaled 11 hits in the game while holding the Thorobreds to just four. Junior pitcher Erica Davis led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four batting performance with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Freshman shortstop Jasmine McCain was one-for-three with a home run.
Winston-Salem State did the most of its damage in the first inning when the team scored four runs. Davis kicked things off with an RBI single that was followed by McCain's two-run home run. Senior third base Kortney Thomas added an RBI single to give the Rams a 4-0 win to open the game. The Rams padded their lead in the second inning when senior left fielder Destiny Snipes scored on a fielder's choice to give the Rams a 5-0 lead. Davis struck again in the sixth inning when she hit an RBI single. The Rams allowed a seventh-inning home run to the Thorobreds, but the team would not let their 6-1 win slip away.
Davis (3-0) got the pitching win. She started the game and went all eight innings with one run allowed (one earned) on four hits. She also recorded five strikeouts and just one walk.
With the win, the Rams improve to 5-1 on the season.
