Rams Score Big in 17-2 Win at Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-3, 1-0 CIAA) opened Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play with a bang when the team took a 17-2 win over the Elizabeth City State Vikings (0-10, 0-1 CIAA) at the 2019 CIAA Softball Round Up. After taking a 4-2 lead into the fifth inning, the Rams scored 13 runs in the inning and held the Vikings scoreless in the bottom of the inning to claim the victory.

The Rams took the win behind a dominating offensive performance. The team totaled 12 hits in the game and scored their second most runs of the season. WSSU junior second base Daijah Chambers led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three batting performance with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI with two walks. Freshman centerfielder Shauntaja Dedecker added a two-for-three batting performance with an RBI and three runs scored while senior catcher Kortney Thomas went one-for-two with three runs scored, two RBI, and two walks.

Sophomore Tia Robinson (5-1) took the pitching win. She started the game and went three innings two runs allowed (two earned) with six strikeouts. Junior Erica Davis came in for two innings with no runs allowed on two hits with four strikeouts.

The Rams scored early in the game before closing out the game with a barrage to claim the victory. It was Chambers who got things started with a first inning solo home run. The Rams allowed the Vikings to score a pair of second inning runs. Chambers struck again when she hit a two-RBI single that was accompanied by a score on a throwing error in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. From there, the Rams broke out for 13 fifth inning runs to claim the 17-2 victory.

With the win, the Rams improve to 10-3 and 1-0 in CIAA play. The team will return to action this afternoon when the team takes on the Bowie State Bulldogs in a 3:45 p.m. game at the South Park Complex in Elizabeth City, N.C.
