WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (20-3, 9-0 CIAA) played some great defense when the team took a 4-0 win over the Fayetteville State Broncos (3-20-3-6 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Rams got all the offense they needed in the fifth inning as the team cruised to the shutout victory.
The game was a defensive battle, but the Rams came out on top. As team, the Rams totaled 11 hits, but were able to turn them into just four runs in the game. WSSU junior second base Daijah Chambers led the way for the Rams with a two-for-four batting effort with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI. Sophomore outfielder Nyla Howard added a two-for-four performance of her own with triple, an RBI, and a run scored. Senior catcher Kortney Thomas was two-for-three at the plate.
The Rams scored all of their runs in the fifth inning. Chambers got things started with an RBI triple that was followed by another RBI triple from Howard. Freshman Alleigh Himes added an RBI fielder's choioce that was followed by the third RBI triple of the inning from freshman Shauntaja Dedecker. The score left the Rams ahead, 4-0.
WSSU junior pitcher Erica Davis (9-2) claimed the pitching win. She started the game and went all seven innings and she allowed just two hits. She also had 10 strikeouts.
With the win, the Rams improve to 20-3 overall and remain undefeated in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play at 9-0. The team also improved to 4-0 in CIAA Southern Division play. The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader later in the day.
