WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (27-10, 15-2 CIAA) began their final home doubleheader in style when the team took a 9-0 win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons (5-18, 5-12 CIAA), Thursday afternoon. The team took the win behind a dominant overall performance that was sparked by some tremendous pitching.
WSSU junior pitcher Erica Davis (11-6) took the pitching win behind a dominating effort. She stared the game and threw all six innings. She held the Falcons scoreless and allowed just two hits in the game. She also finished the game with eight strikeouts.
As a team, the Rams were also impressive at the plate with eight hits. WSSU junior centerfielder Daijah Chambers led the way with a three-for-four bating effort with two RBI and two runs scored. Senior left fielder Destiny Snipes added a two-for-three performance with two runs scored and three RBI.
It was Davis who got things started when she hit an RBI single that scored Chambers. It was Chambers later in the day when she hit an RBI bunt that scored sophomore outfielder Nyla Howard in the third inning. Freshman Aniyah Jones reached base on an SAU fielding error that scored Snipes. Freshman Alleigh Himes added an RBI single of their own. After the third inning, the Rams held a 5-0 lead. The team put the game away in the sixth inning when a Chamber RBI single was followed by a three-RBI single from Snipes that wrapped up the win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 27-10 overall. The team improves to 15-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team also improves to 10-2 in CIAA Southern Division play. The team wraps up the regular season ranked second in the division.
