WSSU Ranked Second in 2020 Division II HBCU Pre-Season Softball Poll; Senior Duo named to Division II Preseason All-HBCU Team


WINSTON-SALEM, NC – After a very successful 2019 season, the Winston-Salem State Rams softball team have earned some high praise as they head into the 2020 season. Heading into the season, the Winston-Salem State Rams were picked second in the Division II HBCU Softball Preseason Poll. Individually, the Rams also had a pair of players named to the 2020 Division II All HBCU Softball Preseason Team in senior outfielder Shauntaja Dedecker and senior utility Daijah Chambers.

The honors came to the Rams after some terrific performances both as a team and individually. The Rams finished the 2019 season on a high note after winning the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship and went on to claim their first win in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament. The seventh-seeded Rams took a 3-0 win over the top-seeded West Virginia State Yellowjackets. The Rams went on to finish the season with a 33-13 record. The team will return with eight players from that team and will look to build upon last season's success.

Looking to lead the way for the Rams will be the senior duo of senior second base Daijah Chambers and senior outfielder Shauntaja Dedecker. Both players were named to the 2019 Division II All HBCU Softball Preseason Team presented by The preseason honor is another of many honors for Chambers. After finishing last season with a .462 batting average and a nine home runs, nine doubles, and five triples. She also added pair of stolen bases. For her efforts, she was a first team All-CIAA selection, a National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) DII All-Region selection and a Division II Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) All-American. She was also named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division All-State team. Dedecker took home the honor after finishing last season with a .340 batting average and a 30 runs scored with 33 RBI. She also had 10 home runs with three doubles. She was also a first team All-CIAA selection last season.
